River madness

If it's this maddening to observe Lee Myung-bak's Korea from a distance, I can't imagine living there right now. It's horrible news after horrible news these days.

Under the so-called "Four-river restoration project," the LMB government will remove mud from the bottom of all major rivers in South Korea, "clean it up" by pouring cement all over them, as well as build two small and medium-sized dams and 16 reservoirs. Basically, they want to dig out the bottoms of all major rivers in South Korea (and they hope not to harm a single fish). To make riverside parks and bike paths and cruise ships. This monstrous, massive-scale, state-led construction work will no doubt wreak ecological havoc and destroy priceless cultural heritage including numerous centuries-old Buddhist temples and historical landmarks. Proponents are calling it a "green new deal," a job creation and "eco-friendly" economic growth program. Opponents call it hogwash and promise a good fight.

The cost? Projected USD $17.8 billion according to the Korea Herald and $13.5 billion according to the Korea Times.
